WEST SPRINGFIELD RECOGNIZED FOR PROVIDING OVER 100 YEARS OF WATER SERVICE
West Springfield, MA: The Water Division of the West Springfield Department of Public Works was recently recognized as a member of the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association’s (“DIPRA”) Cast Iron Pipe Century Club. A ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 5, during which Town representatives were presented with a plaque officially recognizing the Town’s membership in the Cast Iron Pipe Century Club.
The Cast Iron Pipe Century Club was organized in 1947 to publicly recognize water utilities with Cast Iron mains that have provided service for 100 years or more. Deputy Director of Water, Jeffrey Auer, determined that the West Springfield Aqueduct Company began water service operations in Town in 1875. At that time, a 16” main conduit (transmission main) was installed with 8” and 6” distribution mains, some of which are still in use in parts of the downtown area of West Springfield.
During the plaque presentation, Paul Hanson, Executive Director of DIPRA recognized the commitment of the Water Division commenting, “this presentation also allows us to recognize the daily commitment of your water division and engineering professionals, both past and present, to provide the citizens of West Springfield with safe, plentiful and reliable drinking water.”
“Drinking water is one of our most critical assets, the convenience and importance of which is often taken for granted,” commented Mayor Reichelt. “It is incredible that we have been able to continuously provide drinking water to our residents for almost 150 years through responsible maintenance and upgrades of our infrastructure.”
West Springfield is the 547th member of the Cast Iron Pipe Century Club nationwide and the 54th water utility in Massachusetts to be recognized by DIPRA.
