Update from Republic Services on Final Yard Waste Pick-up:

If you still have yard-waste to be picked up and your trash is normally on Thursday or Friday, yard waste will be picked up on Saturday 12/14/19. If it is not picked up on Saturday it will be picked up on Tuesday 12/17/19. If your yard waste has not been picked up by the end of the day Tuesday please call DPW at 263-3246 and provide your address and DPW will pick it up.

Winter Swim Lessons

The Park & Recreation Department offers Winter swim lessons for the following levels. All swim lessons are held at West Springfield High School's Sady Pool, at 425 Piper Road. Class size is limited. Please register early, for these classes will fill fast. Classes take place on Sundays.                

Levels are as follows: 

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills (minimum 4 years old)

Purpose - To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.

Objectives:

1. Opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged objects, 2 times (in shallow water).
2. Back float, 3 seconds.
3. Treading using arm and hand actions (in chest deep water).
4. Combined arm and leg actions on front, 2 body lengths.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills 

Purpose - To provide students with opportunities for success with fundamental skills such as tread water and basic swim strokes. 

Objectives:

1. Fully submerging and holding breath, 5 seconds.
2. Front glide, 2 body lengths.
3. Back float, 15 seconds.
4. Combined arm and leg actions on front, 5 body lengths.
5. Combined arm and leg actions on back, 5 body lengths.

Level 3 -Stroke Development

Purpose – Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water.

Objectives:

1. Headfirst entry from the side in a kneeling position (in water at least 9 feet deep).
2. Rotary breathing, 10 times.
3. Tread Water, 30 Seconds.
4. Front Crawl, 15 yards.
5. Elementary backstroke, 15 yards.
6. Scissors kick, 10 yards.

Fee: $40 Residents, $50 Non Residents

3 Options on How to Register:

Option 1: Register with us- Stop by the Park and Recreation Department with a filled out FORM B, birth certificate (for new swimmers), and form of payment (Cash or check ONLY). We'll take care of the rest! Please make checks out to Town of West Springfield.

Option 2: Register online- Can't make it to the office? Don't worry! Click on our online registration link to fill out everything online! New user? click here. Proof of household residency (a license or utility bill with current address on it) and proof of age (ID or birth certificate for children) are required for NEW households, so please submit copies to the Park and Recreation Office after your registration and account creation are complete.

Option 3: Mail in your documents- If you'd rather fill out paperwork and send it to us, that works too! Please send in FORM B, a copy of the child's birth certificate (for new swimmers), and a check made out to Town of West Springfield. Send it to us at:
