Bulletin: Connecting to the Sanitary Sewer System

Per the health code of the Town of West Springfield, all properties that have the availability to connect to municipal sanitary sewer must do so within 5 years of availability. This work must be completed by a company licensed as a Drain-Layer by the Town, who also must apply for a permit from the Department of Public Works.

The Health Department requires an inspection for all retired septic systems.  Any connection to the municipal system must also be accompanied by a decommissioning of its septic tank.

Sanitary Sewer OverFlow Notifications

Sanitary Sewer Overflow Notifications

In the event of a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO), a notice will be publicly displayed on the table below. During an SSO, untreated sanitary sewer water has escaped from the Town's sewer collection system unintentionally. Any bodies of water potentially affected by an SSO should be avoided for at least 48 hours after the event has been rectified.

Members of the general public can register at the link below to receive email notifications of any SSO events that may occur. Notices will be generated and distributed for:

  • SSO discovery

  • SSO status updates

  • SSO conclusion

  • Retraction of misidentified SSOs
