High Five and Mount Everest by Harold Grinspoon--PC Madeline Calabrese.jpg

Leading up to the 250th inaugural celebration of West Springfield, two sculpture installations Everest and High Five by artist Harold Grinspoon have been placed at the corner of Park and Elm Street near the Veteran’s Memorial.

Everest is comprised of over 200 green glass floats from the Asian fishing industry. Grinspoon first found the green glass spheres at the Brimfield Antique Flea Market, where he often goes for inspirational objects. He enjoyed the challenge of making the pyramid structure, using the glass buoys. The most recent version of Everest includes a large pyramid, a river of green glass spheres that lead to a smaller pyramid. This past summer, Everest was featured in the Sculpture Now 2023 exhibition at The Mount, Edith Wharton’s Historic Home and Studio in Lenox, Massachusetts.

The other sculpture, High Five, is created using reflective steel spheres that are separated by brightly colored acrylic tubes around flexible fiberglass that allow for motion with the wind. Grinspoon’s idea is to create joy in the viewers who interact with the piece. Harold Grinspoon is best known for his local philanthropic grant programs that award teachers, farmers, and energy programs.
