Control Valves Improvement Project

The water distribution system in the Town of West Springfield contains eight control valves that separate hydraulic grade lines – essentially pressure zones – between service zones and interconnections with Springfield. In 2020, inspections of these valves were completed that showered that many of the low service zone boundary control valves were about 100 years old, with three of the five valves being non-functional and beyond repair. All five valves were selected for replacement, as the consequence of failure is high and the limited redundancy for serving the low service zones would mean failure would leave those areas without water. Also included in the project are improvements to the pump station control valves in order to protect the water supply equipment from unanticipated pressure surges.
