West Springfield, MA: The Town of West Springfield announces that a portion of Riverdale Street (Route 5) between Morgan Road and Elm Street will be completely closed to all traffic beginning at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Work is expected to be completed, and the roadway reopened, by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 19.
During this time, traffic will be detoured through Piper Road between East Elm Street and Morgan Road. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes and allow extra travel time.
The closure is necessary for the Town to conduct a required test of the stop log flood wall structure located along Riverdale Street. A stop log system is a series of removable steel beams and aluminum panels that can be installed across an opening such as a roadway to form a temporary flood barrier. The structure is an important component of the Town’s levee system, which protects residents and businesses from potential flooding of the Connecticut River.
This test, required every five years by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ensures that the stop log system functions properly and can be deployed quickly and effectively in the event of a flood emergency.
“These tests are essential to maintaining our flood protection system and keeping our community safe,” said Mayor William C. Reichelt. “We appreciate residents’ patience and cooperation during this brief overnight closure as we complete this important work.”
The Town of West Springfield thanks the public for its understanding and cooperation during this scheduled safety operation.
