West Springfield Seeks Volunteers For Various Boards And Committees

West Springfield, MA: The Town of West Springfield is seeking dedicated volunteers to serve on a number of important boards and committees that provide critical input and guidance to Town government. These groups help shape policy, advise municipal officials, and support community needs across a wide range of subject areas. Residents interested in public service are encouraged to apply for the following vacancies:

Board of Appeals (Zoning) – Two (2) Vacancies – Alternate Members
The Board of Appeals is responsible for interpreting and applying local zoning regulations and acting as the permit-granting authority on matters such as variances and appeals of decisions made by the Building Commissioner or other zoning officials. The Board ensures fair and consistent application of zoning laws, provides due process for residents and property owners, and serves as the Board of Appeals for the purposes of M.G.L. c. 41, § 81Z. Alternate members participate in hearings and decision-making when regular members are unavailable, helping to ensure continuity and timely review of zoning matters.

Commission on Disabilities – Two (2) Vacancies
Established under M.G.L. c. 40, § 8J, the Commission on Disabilities works to promote the full integration and participation of individuals with disabilities in the community. The Commission researches local disability-related issues; advises Town officials to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations; coordinates programs and services; reviews municipal policies, activities and facilities affecting individuals with disabilities; and provides information, technical assistance, and referrals to residents, businesses, and public agencies. Preference will be given to individuals with disabilities or immediate family members of individuals with disabilities.

Conservation Commission – Three (3) Vacancies
The Conservation Commission is charged with protecting West Springfield’s natural resources and preserving the community’s environmental quality in accordance with M.G.L. c. 40, § 8C and the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act. The Commission reviews and regulates activities that may impact wetlands, waterways, floodplains, and other resource areas to ensure that development and land use are conducted responsibly and with minimal environmental harm. The Commission also plays an important role in open space planning, environmental education, and the stewardship of Town-owned conservation land. Members work to balance community growth with long-term sustainability and the protection of vital natural habitats.

Cultural Council – One (1) Vacancy
The Cultural Council is responsible for distributing grant funding provided by the Mass Cultural Council and supporting community-based arts, cultural, humanities, and science programs that enrich the quality of life for West Springfield residents. The Council reviews and awards grants, promotes equitable access to cultural experiences, and supports initiatives such as public performances, educational programs, and local cultural events. Members serve three-year terms and work collaboratively to encourage creative and diverse cultural opportunities throughout the community.

Historical Commission – Two (2) Vacancies – Alternate Members
The Historical Commission is responsible for preserving, protecting, and promoting West Springfield’s historic and archaeological resources. Its duties include surveying and identifying historically significant buildings and sites; maintaining and updating an inventory of historic assets; creating and installing markers and informational materials such as walking tours and publications; and collecting, preserving, and digitizing archival records for public access. The Commission may also propose the creation or modification of local historic districts and advises Town boards and departments on matters related to historic preservation and community development. Alternate members participate when regular members are unavailable.

Library Board of Trustees - One (1) Vacancy
The Library Board of Trustees serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and the Library Director, helping guide the operations, policies, and long-term strategic goals of the West Springfield Public Library. Trustees act as a vital link between the library and the community, advocating for accessible and innovative library services and ensuring that the library reflects the needs of residents. Board members collaborate with library staff and community stakeholders, offering insight and expertise as they support responsible budgeting, planning, and governance. Individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives are encouraged to apply, as a broad representation of the community strengthens the effectiveness and vision of the Board.

Redevelopment Authority – One (1) Vacancy
Established under M.G.L. c. 121B, § 4, the Redevelopment Authority works to eliminate blighted, decadent, or substandard conditions through planning and redevelopment activities and supports projects intended to stimulate economic development, revitalize neighborhoods, and enhance community assets.

Veterans Advisory Board – Two (2) Vacancies
Responsible for organizing and implementing Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day activities; establishing nomination and review procedures for the annual “Veteran of the Year” recognition; and supporting other patriotic events throughout the year. Members must be veterans, Gold Star family members, or members in good standing of a nongovernmental support organization that serves West Springfield veterans.
