The intersection of Piper Road and Amostown Road has been a hotspot for car accidents over the past several years. In fact, the intersection is listed as a top crash location by MassDOT; Between 2020 and 2023 alone, 21 crash reports are listed on the MassDOT Crash Data Portal. Therefore, the Town decided to review the safety and transportation functions of the intersection at all levels. Importantly, Piper Road is classified as an urban minor arterial under Town jurisdiction, going generally north and south and curving slightly at the intersection. Amostown Road is classified as an urban minor arterial on the east leg and an urban collector on the west leg. It goes east to west in general and is curved 200–250 feet away from the intersection on either side, limiting visibility to the intersection.
The alternative improvement plan includes geometric, traffic control (with signage and a traffic signal) and a modern roundabout, which will be prepared and evaluated with the Town. The desired limits of work include about 800 feet on Piper Road extending about 400 feet north and south of the Amostown Road intersection, and about 800 feet on Amostown Road, extending about 400 feet north and south of the Piper Road intersection.
