West Springfield, MA – The Town of West Springfield is proud to announce its participation in a community Mail Carrier Food Drive, featuring a friendly – and spirited – competition with the Town of Agawam to support local food pantries.

On May 9, residents of West Springfield are encouraged to place non-perishable food donations in a bag or box by their mailbox prior to their regular mail delivery time. Letter carriers will collect the donations during their normal routes, making it simple and convenient for residents to participate.

At the end of the day, donations from West Springfield and Agawam will be weighed to determine which community collected the most food. The winning town will earn community bragging rights and a bit of extra fun at Town Hall: the Mayor of the winning community will personally hand-deliver town-branded apparel and swag to the Mayor of the losing community. As part of the friendly wager, the losing Mayor will wear the winning town’s apparel of choice for the entire workday.

“This is a great way to tap into our friendly rivalry with Agawam while doing something meaningful for families who rely on local food assistance,” said [Mayor’s Name], Mayor of West Springfield. “If there’s one competition we never want to lose, it’s the one that helps our neighbors. We’re calling on all West Side residents to step up, fill those bags, and make sure we come out on top.”

All donations collected in West Springfield will benefit local organizations that provide food and essential items to residents in need. By participating, residents help keep pantry shelves stocked and support vital community services.

How to Participate (West Springfield Residents):

  • Mark your calendar for May 9

  • Purchase a few extra non-perishable food items (such as canned goods, pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, and shelf-stable items)

  • Place your clearly labeled donation bag or box by your mailbox before your regular mail delivery time on May 9

  • Your mail carrier will collect the items during their normal route

Residents are encouraged to follow the Town of West Springfield’s official communication channels for reminders, updates, and final results of the challenge with Agawam.
