REMINDER: Mandatory Level 2 Water Restrictions Remain in Effect
Published on April 27, 2026
WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA – As the Connecticut River Valley continues to navigate a Level 2 Drought, the Town of West Springfield is reminding all residents and businesses that Mandatory Water Use Restrictions remain in full effect.
Originally implemented on September 19, 2025, these restrictions follow the declaration by the Secretary of Energy & Environmental Affairs and are required under both state (310 CMR 36.00) and local (Chapter 257-7) regulations. The measures are designed to protect our shared water supply and ensure sufficient resources for fire protection, health, and public safety during this period of environmental stress.
Why Conservation Matters
While it may be tempting to resume normal outdoor activities, a Level 2 drought indicates a significant deficit in precipitation. Every gallon saved through individual effort helps maintain the water pressure and volume necessary for essential services.
"Conservation is a community effort," says the Office of the Mayor. "By adhering to these restrictions today, we are ensuring that West Springfield remains resilient and prepared for the remainder of the season."
Quick Guide to Current Restrictions
Non-Essential Outdoor Water Use is PROHIBITED. This includes:
Permitted (Essential) Uses Include:
-
Hand-watering: Using hand-held hoses or watering cans for flower gardens and ornamentals.
-
Health & Safety: Any use required for public safety or medical needs.
-
Food & Livestock: Maintenance of vegetable gardens and livestock.
-
Core Business Functions: Water used as a primary tool for a business (e.g., commercial power washing).
-
Public Spaces: Irrigation of parks and recreational fields is restricted to before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM.
Who Must Comply?
These restrictions apply to all customers connected to the Town of West Springfield’s drinking water system. While residents with private wells are not legally bound by these specific rules, the Town strongly encourages everyone—regardless of their water source—to practice conservation to help stabilize the local water table.
Failure to Comply
Please be advised that these restrictions are mandatory. The Town will continue to monitor usage to ensure compliance with MassDEP regulations.
