WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA — Have you ever wondered how our town transformed from an ancient landscape into the bustling community we see today? The West Springfield Cultural Council is proud to announce a unique historical event that offers a literally elevated perspective on our local heritage.
On Tuesday, June 9th at 6:30 PM, residents are invited to the West Springfield Public Library for an engaging presentation: West Springfield: A History from Above, featuring local historian and West Springfield High School History Department Chair, Stan Svec.
This isn't your average history lecture. Using Google Earth aerial photography, Stan Svec will guide the audience through a visual timeline of our region. The journey begins with the ancient continent of Laurentia and travels forward through the centuries, highlighting the landmarks and shifts that shaped our town—concluding with a deep dive into the story behind our famous (and infamous) traffic circles.
"This presentation is designed to be interactive and fun," says Svec. "By looking at our town from above, we can see the 'fingerprints' of history that aren't always visible from the sidewalk."
This event arrives at a significant moment as the nation prepares for the United States 250th Anniversary. By exploring our local roots, the Cultural Council aims to connect West Springfield’s unique story to the broader tapestry of American history. It reflects the Council's ongoing mission to provide meaningful, community-centered programming that is accessible to everyone.
The program is free and open to the public. No pre-registration or tickets are required—just bring your curiosity!
