Elimination of Front Street CSX Crossing

There is a long history of issues at this crossing dating back to 1967. Since 1979, there have been eight recorded crash incidents, with three occurring within the last ten years and six in the last twenty years. This crossing is listed by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission April 2019 Top High Risk At-Grade Railroad Crossings in the Pioneer Valley. Therefore, the Town of West Springfield aims to work with CSX and MassDOT to create a solution.

This project proposes to replace the at-grade crossings with an overpass along a new roadway alignment to achieve railroad under-grade separation. This is needed in order to address safety and mobility concerns at the crossings.

The CSX Railroad runs on an east-west alignment though the center of the study area, located just north of the Westfield River adjacent to the Agawam town line. The Study Area extends from the intersection of Second Street to Summit Street, south to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, east to Pleasant Street, and west to the end of Front Street.
